The Colombia vs DR Congo match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was one of the more interesting games in Group K. Colombia entered the match after a strong opening-round victory, while DR Congo were looking to build on their positive start against Portugal. The two teams had never previously met in a senior international match, which made the fixture particularly interesting for football fans.
When the final whistle arrived at Estadio Guadalajara, Colombia had secured a narrow 1-0 victory. Daniel Muñoz scored the only goal of the match in the 76th minute, giving Colombia six points from their first two group matches and confirming their place in the knockout stage.
The scoreline was close, but the match itself showed an interesting contrast in styles. Colombia controlled much of the possession and created a number of opportunities, while DR Congo defended with discipline and relied on moments of attacking danger. Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi was particularly important for DR Congo, making several impressive saves to keep his team in the game for long periods.
Colombia vs DR Congo Match Result
The final result was Colombia 1-0 DR Congo.
The match was played on June 23, 2026, at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, Mexico. The official attendance was 45,358, showing the strong interest surrounding the Group K fixture. Daniel Muñoz scored the winning goal in the 76th minute.
The first half ended without a goal. Colombia created several opportunities but could not find a way past Mpasi. DR Congo also had opportunities to threaten the Colombian defense, although their attacks were less frequent.
After the break, Colombia continued to push forward. Eventually, Muñoz found the breakthrough in the 76th minute. His goal came after Colombia had spent much of the match looking for space around the DR Congo defense.
The final minutes became more difficult for Colombia as DR Congo increased the pressure. Colombia managed to protect its advantage and finished the game with all three points.
Daniel Muñoz Decides the Game
Daniel Muñoz was the player who made the biggest difference on the scoreboard. His 76th-minute goal gave Colombia a victory that had looked difficult to achieve earlier in the match.
The goal was particularly important because DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi had repeatedly stopped Colombia’s attempts. FIFA reported that Colombia had already tested Mpasi several times before Muñoz finally broke through.
Muñoz had already scored in Colombia’s opening World Cup match, meaning he scored in consecutive games at the tournament. His ability to contribute from a defensive position gave Colombia another attacking option.
For Colombia, having a defender capable of arriving in dangerous areas can be extremely valuable. Against a team sitting deeper, players from the back can create additional problems when midfielders and forwards are closely marked.
Colombia’s Dominance in Attack
Although Colombia won by only one goal, the statistics show that the team created significantly more attacking opportunities.
According to Opta’s match data, Colombia attempted 20 shots, while DR Congo attempted eight. Colombia’s expected-goals figure was 1.03 compared with 0.39 for DR Congo.
Those numbers help explain why Colombia spent so much of the match looking like the more dangerous attacking side.
Luis Díaz, James Rodríguez, Jhon Arias, and Muñoz were among the Colombian players who created problems for the DR Congo defense. However, Mpasi repeatedly kept the score level.
Colombia also had two goals from Luis Díaz ruled out for offside, which made the final scoreline look even tighter than the overall attacking statistics suggested.
Lionel Mpasi’s Important Performance
One of the main reasons DR Congo remained competitive was goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.
Mpasi faced several dangerous efforts from Colombia and made important saves throughout the match. His performance gave DR Congo hope of earning at least a point, even while Colombia continued to create chances.
Goalkeepers can sometimes be overlooked when a team loses, but this was a match where the DR Congo goalkeeper played an important role in keeping the score at 0-0 for more than 75 minutes.
Despite his saves, he was eventually beaten by Muñoz.
How DR Congo Played
DR Congo used a defensive structure designed to make it difficult for Colombia to find space in the final third. Their lineup featured five defenders, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Steve Kapuadi, Axel Tuanzebe, Chancel Mbemba, and Arthur Masuaku forming the main defensive line.
The approach made sense against a Colombian side with dangerous attacking players.
Rather than opening the game too much, DR Congo attempted to remain compact and look for opportunities to counterattack. Yoane Wissa and Cédric Bakambu provided the main attacking threat.
Wissa was particularly important because of his pace and ability to attack space. However, Colombia generally managed to limit the number of clear chances DR Congo could create.
Colombia’s Starting Lineup
Colombia started with Camilo Vargas in goal. The defense included Daniel Muñoz, Jhon Lucumí, Davinson Sánchez, and Johan Mojica.
Jefferson Lerma and Gustavo Puerta provided the central midfield base, while James Rodríguez played an important creative role. Jhon Arias and Luis Díaz operated in attacking areas, with Luis Suárez leading the line.
The lineup showed the balance Colombia wanted between defensive stability and attacking creativity.
James Rodríguez remained an important figure for Colombia despite being in the later stages of his international career. Against DR Congo, he also reached a significant World Cup appearance milestone.
According to Opta, the match was Rodríguez’s 10th World Cup appearance, matching the Colombian record previously held by Carlos Valderrama and Freddy Rincón.
DR Congo’s Starting Lineup
DR Congo began with Lionel Mpasi in goal and a five-man defensive line containing Wan-Bissaka, Kapuadi, Tuanzebe, Mbemba, and Masuaku.
Ngal’ayel Mukau, Samuel Moutoussamy, and Edo Kayembe formed the midfield, while Bakambu and Wissa were used in attack.
This lineup gave DR Congo physical strength in defense while still leaving them with two forwards capable of causing problems when possession was recovered.
The team also had experienced players who could help maintain organization under pressure.
Colombia vs DR Congo Head-to-Head Record
Before the 2026 World Cup, Colombia and DR Congo had not played each other in a recorded senior international match.
That made their World Cup meeting a historic first encounter. The match therefore immediately became the first entry in the head-to-head record between the two national teams.
After Colombia’s 1-0 victory, the record stands at one Colombia win, no draws, and no DR Congo wins.
Because the teams had no previous competitive history, there were no traditional head-to-head trends that could be used to understand the matchup before kickoff.
Colombia’s World Cup Position
The victory was especially important for Colombia because it secured their progression to the knockout stage.
Colombia had already beaten Uzbekistan 3-1 in their opening Group K match. The 1-0 win against DR Congo gave them six points from two matches. FIFA confirmed that the result guaranteed Colombia a place in the Round of 32.
The team therefore entered its final group match against Portugal with a strong position.
A draw against Portugal would be enough for Colombia to secure first place in the group according to the situation after the DR Congo match.
DR Congo’s Situation After the Match
The defeat left DR Congo with one point after two matches.
That point came from their opening 1-1 draw against Portugal. Their second match therefore became extremely important, but the narrow loss to Colombia meant they still had a route toward the knockout stage.
DR Congo needed a positive result against Uzbekistan and also needed other results to work in their favor. FIFA noted that the team could still advance if they defeated Uzbekistan and received the necessary results elsewhere.
This made their final group match particularly significant.
Key Statistics From Colombia vs DR Congo
The statistics tell an interesting story about the match.
Colombia recorded 20 shots compared with eight for DR Congo. The Colombian side also produced 1.03 expected goals, while DR Congo recorded 0.39.
The numbers show that Colombia generated more attacking opportunities, but they did not turn that advantage into multiple goals.
That is why the performance of Mpasi was so important. If the goalkeeper had not made several early saves, the game could have developed into a much more comfortable victory for Colombia.
Instead, one goal was enough.
Why the Match Was So Close
A 1-0 result can sometimes suggest that the two teams were evenly matched in every area. In this case, the statistics suggest a more complicated story.
Colombia had more shots and more attacking pressure, but DR Congo defended effectively for long periods. Their compact defensive setup made it difficult for Colombia to find clear shooting opportunities.
Colombia also struggled with finishing at certain moments. Several chances were saved, while two Díaz goals were ruled out for offside.
That combination kept DR Congo within touching distance until the final stages.
James Rodríguez and Colombia’s Experience
James Rodríguez brought significant international experience to the Colombian lineup.
His 10th World Cup appearance placed him alongside Valderrama and Rincón for the most World Cup appearances by a Colombian player.
His role against DR Congo was not simply about his individual statistics. His ability to operate between midfield and attack gave Colombia another way to move the ball forward.
For a team facing a compact defense, experienced creative players can be especially useful because they can recognize spaces that may not be obvious during fast attacking sequences.
What the Result Means for Both Teams
For Colombia, the result was another step toward a deep World Cup run. Winning the first two group games gave the team a strong platform and guaranteed qualification for the knockout stage.
For DR Congo, the situation was more difficult but not completely closed after the loss. Their opening draw against Portugal had given them a point, and a final-match victory could still keep their tournament alive depending on other results.
The match therefore had very different consequences for the two sides.
Colombia could look forward, while DR Congo had to focus immediately on its final group fixture.
Final Thoughts
The Colombia vs DR Congo match was ultimately decided by a single moment. Daniel Muñoz’s 76th-minute goal ended Colombia’s long wait for a breakthrough and secured a 1-0 victory.
However, the match was about more than just the final score. Colombia created 20 shots and controlled much of the attacking play, while DR Congo showed strong defensive organization and received an excellent performance from goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.
The result also created a piece of World Cup history because it was the first recorded senior international meeting between Colombia and DR Congo. Colombia now lead the head-to-head record with one victory.
For Colombia, the win confirmed progression to the knockout stage and continued a strong start to the tournament. For DR Congo, the result made their final group match even more important.
Overall, the game demonstrated how difficult World Cup matches can be. A team can dominate possession and create more chances, yet still need patience to find a breakthrough. In Guadalajara, Colombia eventually found that breakthrough through Muñoz, while DR Congo’s defensive resistance kept the contest competitive until the final stages.
